Get The Support You Need With A Postpartum Doula

Having a strong support system after you give birth is essential! Too often moms find that everyone is just coming over to see the new baby and don’t bother to find actual ways to help you out postpartum. If you feel like you might need extra help postpartum or if you’ve already had your baby and are feeling completely overwhelmed, you might want to consider a postpartum doula.

What Is A Postpartum Doula?

Postpartum doulas offer support and evidence-based information on infant feedings, emotional and physical recovery from birth, soothing your newborn, facilitating bonding, and basic newborn care. They are usually on call for you as well, meaning that if you have any questions or concerns, you can ask them and they will give you a prompt response.

What Services Do Postpartum Doulas Offer?

Some postpartum doulas also work nights so that you can sleep throughout the night while they are on baby duty and take care of all of the night feedings and changes. This allows you to catch up on your sleep and be able to be more present when interacting with your newborn during the day. Others may also help with cooking, running errands, or tidying up your house so that you can spend time solely focused on your baby. The services and hours differ among postpartum doulas so find someone who offers what you need and who you feel a connection with. Your postpartum doula should be a non-judgmental helper who not only cares for your baby, but prioritizes your wellbeing in this time as you recover and adjust to life with a newborn.

How Much Do Postpartum Doulas Cost?

Some postpartum doulas offer very specific packages that include the services that they provide, how often they will be present each week, and how long they will be contracted. These packages often come with pretty firm pricing. However, others are willing to negotiate the services that you are looking for as well as the hours you need them each week. This can then provide some leeway and make having a postpartum doula less expensive. Some doulas only offer short-term contracts of 1-6 weeks postpartum and others will continue their services well into the first year of your baby’s life. Look at the postpartum doulas in your area to see what packages they offer or if they are willing to make any adjustments if needed. In some cases postpartum doulas ae covered by insurance, so check your coverage to see if you can get additional financial assistance.

Studies have shown that postpartum doulas greatly aid in the transition from pregnancy to taking care of a newborn. If you want some help making the transition into postpartum life smoother, meet with the postpartum doulas in your area and find the one who is perfect for you!
