What Is A Nutritional Doula?

Nutritional doulas help pregnant women monitor their exercise and diet over the course of the pregnancy to help increase the likelihood of a healthy birth for the mother and baby.

What Does A Nutritional Doula Do?

A nutritional doula looks at your daily food intake and exercise level to assess where any adjustments can and should be made. For example, if you are eating selective nutritious foods, but are missing out on important micro or macronutrients found in other healthy foods, the doula will make suggestions for what foods should be increased or decreased. Essentially they are helping you pinpoint not only what is missing from your diet, but what should be changed out or eaten more or less frequently. As for exercise, whatever your current fitness level is, nutritional doulas help create a doable exercise regime with you and will be your accountability partner as you work to keep your body active in pregnancy.

Who Is A Nutritional Doula Most Helpful For?

Nutritional doulas are especially popular and beneficial for women who suffer from gestational diabetes, thyroid problems, low blood sugar, or obesity. This is because these women require additional monitoring of what they are eating and different levels in their body to make sure they are staying on track. However, a nutritional doula can be extremely helpful for any woman looking for additional support, encouragement, and accountability in her pregnancy to keep her and her baby healthy and strong.

They have been found to decrease the number of medical interventions needed during birth and helped women to have faster, easier labors and recoveries. Nutritional doulas are rarely present at the time of birth, their main purpose is focused on pregnancy and helping you care for your body so that you and your baby are healthy and physically prepared for labor and delivery.
